The Men of Les Ballet Trockadero Participate in the “It Gets Better” Project

Posted on June 23, 2011

In celebration of gay pride month I decided to post this video of the men of Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo speaking on their experiences growing up as gay male dancers. The video was filmed for the It Gets Better Project, a project which was started by Dan Savage and his partner Terry who created a Youtube video in response to the rising number of young people taking their lives after being bullied in school.

The men of Les Ballet Trockadero, also known as the Trocks, are the perfect people to speak out on their own experiences of being bullied in school because the company that they are a part of comments on sexuality and gender roles in a big way. The company is an all male comedic ensemble that mostly performs in drag.

Some of these men say that they were bullied throughout their adolescence because of their sexual identity, but today they perform for huge audiences all over the world wearing women’s clothing and makeup. It’s important that dance companies participate in campaigns that they connect to, and for the Trocks, this choice was perfect. I hope that young dancers around the world get a chance to see this video so that they can better understand that after high school and middle school, “it gets better.”
